Garth George: Change is in the air, but not man-made

From NZ Herald

By Garth George

After 13 years of writing this weekly column I have become inured to criticism, to which I rarely respond, but the letter by Jim Salinger published on the page opposite on Monday demands a reply.

Typical of patronising PhDs, Dr Salinger labels me a "climate change denier". That is downright dishonest. However, it is understandable considering that those who peddle the CO2-is-the-cause-of-global-warming fallacy rely on pseudo-science which is in itself dishonest.

I am not, and nor are the many, many people - scientific and lay - who agree with me, a climate change denier. We cheerfully admit that our climate is changing. It would be hard not to, since climate change has been happening since the Earth was created.

It might even be warming, at least in some parts of the world, but having just suffered the longest and coldest winter since the 1960s in Rotorua, I have real cause to doubt that it is happening here.

Puppets in Parliament and Pay-offs on the Road to Carbonia

Viv Forbes (Carbon-Sense)

12 October 2009

Malcolm Turnbull met coal mining chiefs recently. He said later that the miners begged him to negotiate a compromise deal. They want the Liberals to lobby for exemptions from Penny Wong’s Ration-N-Tax Scheme.

The big miners supported the scheme in the belief that exporters would be exempt, and they would also get buckets of taxpayer money for fantasies like carbon capture and burial. Now they find that the dog they unleashed is menacing them. The Ration-N-Tax Scheme proposes a tax on fugitive mine emissions of methane and carbon dioxide. This will close many gassy mines unless they get a special exemption.

Other Liberal leaders have said that big business wants the “certainty” of the Ration-N-Tax Scheme. There can be no certainty on the amount of damage any Ration-N-Tax Scheme will bring. We know the economic damage of a full blown scheme will be large (that is what it is designed to do) but no one knows how large. The only certainty is that whatever we do with carbon dioxide will have no effect on the climate. The only way to get a “certain” outcome from Parliament is to reject this bill entirely.

UN Climate Reprt Confuses Artic and Antarctic

Things get stranger and stranger with the United Nations’ world-class, cream-of-the-crop science compendium published two weeks back.

First, it was learned that the alarming graph indicating temperature for the past 1,000 years had been taken from Wikipedia, where it had been deposited by a non-climatologist. Now, it comes to light that the report features a photograph purporting to show Arctic icebergs melting, when the actual image is of Antarctica.

Antarctic Ice melt at Lowest Levels in Satellite Era

From Alex Jones's Prison Planet.

World Climate Report
Wednesday, October 7, 2009

Where are the headlines? Where are the press releases? Where is all the attention?

The ice melt across during the Antarctic summer (October-January) of 2008-2009 was the lowest ever recorded in the satellite history.

Such was the finding reported last week by Marco Tedesco and Andrew Monaghan in the journal Geophysical Research Letters:

A 30-year minimum Antarctic snowmelt record occurred during austral summer 2008–2009 according to spaceborne microwave observations for 1980–2009. Strong positive phases of both the El-Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Southern Hemisphere Annular Mode (SAM) were recorded during the months leading up to and including the 2008–2009 melt season.

LAST Saturday's column was devoted to eco-fundamentalism, the new deep-green
religion. It may have come as a surprise to some readers who had imagined
themselves sceptical agnostics or atheists to learn that they were in the grip
of an essentially religious enthusiasm. Some have written in to deny it and
others have wondered whether I may have been carried away by a metaphor or
trying to taint the greenhouse hypothesis by associating it with superstition.

To answer the last point first, I'm not remotely anti-religious and use the term
fundamentalism in a diagnostic rather than a dismissive way. There is a vast
gulf fixed between the sceptical, rational approach and a religio-magical view
of the world.

Climate Change still with us but Global Warming Cancelled

First Published in NBR:4/4/08 Straight Thinking – By Owen McShane

Or: Being in the Hottest Spot at the Right Time

Unlike so many of the hapless victims on TVOne’s daily Crimewatch – (also known as TVOne News) I have recently been lucky enough to be in two right places at the right time.

In December, last year, at the UN conference in Bali, I heard Viscount Monckton present a paper prepared by himself, the Australian Dr David Evans, and our own Dr Vincent Gray (who were at Bali too) which showed that while the IPCC models predict that greenhouse gases would produce an extensive “hot spot” in the upper troposphere over the tropics the satellite measurements show no such hotspots have appeared.

Monckton and Evans found that a large part of this discrepancy is the result of some basic errors in the IPCC’s assessment of the Stefan-Boltzmann equation. When they applied their revised factor to the effect of greenhouse gases the temperature rise was about a third of that predicted by the IPCC.

UN IPCC SCIENCE REVIEWED- Fair Farmers group

Following is an analysis by the Fair Farmers group of the effects of

an ETS on the farming sector. It draws attention to many deficiencies

in the IPCC based science used to justify an ETS applying to the

sector and calls for an independent inquiry before any action is taken

to proceed with the scheme.

What happened to Global Warming? -BBC

By Paul Hudson
Climate correspondent, BBC News

This headline may come as a bit of a surprise, so too might that fact that the warmest year recorded globally was not in 2008 or 2007, but in 1998.

But it is true. For the last 11 years we have not observed any increase in global temperatures.

And our climate models did not forecast it, even though man-made carbon dioxide, the gas thought to be responsible for warming our planet, has continued to rise.

So what on Earth is going on?

Farmers hit out at new-look ETS plan

By BLAIR ENSOR - The Marlborough Express

Last updated 13:00 09/10/2009

Marlborough farmers unleashed a scathing attack on the Government at a meeting held to discuss the Emissions Trading Scheme.

About 60 people, mostly farmers, attended The Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), What It Means For You event last night, hosted by Marlborough Federated Farmers.

"It [the ETS] is a treacherous journey, but the risk of not being in it is too big," said Kaikoura MP Colin King, which drew loud cries of "rubbish" from the floor.

New Zealand's failure to implement an ETS could damage exports and access to markets of the wealthiest nations, Mr King said. The country's 100 per cent pure image and the tourism industry could also be tarnished.
