Farmers wary on plantation plan

Farmers will judge a large-scale afforestation scheme that aims to reap benefits from the Government's carbon emissions legislation when they see the details, says an industry leader.

Waikato Federated Farmers president Stew Wadey said the Environment Waikato proposal had potential, but farmers wanted to see much more detail through a public consultation process before judging its merit.

The proposal suggests almost $40 million – some diverted from offshore investments held by the council – be poured into joint ventures with landowners.

It also proposes that investors turn 20,000 hectares of the region's riparian and marginal pastoral hill country into plantation forest and allow another 15,000ha to revert to native bush.
