To Nick Smith from Alan N 27 June 2010

The madness of the Government’s new carbon tax is that New Zealanders will be the only people in the world paying it. It will drive up the costs of living and undermine the competitiveness of New Zealand business for negligible environmental gain. A further concern is its impact on inflation, interest rates and the exchange rate. It will add to the costs of fuel and power and these flow right through the economy to basics like food. This puts pressure on inflation, which in turn drives up interest rates and the kiwi dollar. The Government’s carbon tax is a classic example of the way the Government is making things tougher for the productive exporting sector. The worst aspect of the carbon tax is that it will not make one iota of difference to New Zealand’s emissions. Nick Smith 2005
Nick Smith your words come back to haunt you. The costs you opposed in 2005 as a tax will become far greater under your so called ETS, as it becomes open to abuse from unscrupulous traders.
What could not be afforded under a booming economy, certainly can not  be justified with the economy under stress. This stupidity you have unleashed on the country has absolutely no chance of success, unless you are prepared to reduce the current population levels by 50%. Are you going to "order" the army to shoot half the population to met your ridiculous emission targets?
As long as the population continues to grow, so will emissions from fossil fuels. An increasing population must be fed and provided for. Unless of course you want this nation to become a third world nation unable to support its population.
You also seem to have forgotten that in 1990 the nation was just emerging from a recession with far lower use of fuels than now and with a much lower GDP, also with only 75% of the current population. It is no wonder so called emissions have increased dramatically since then.
This insistence of yours in continuing with this ridiculous concept and your refusal to acknowledge or accept the latest scientific studies on climate, which prove beyond doubt, that what has happened over the last 150 years, is of natural  origens. Combined with your previous stand this leads one to question your motives.
Why the insistence something has to be done, especially something that will be hugely expensive and give no benefit at all for the environment. Who is paying you to do this Nick Smith, who has bought you off and how much are you getting to betray this nation and it's people?
As long as this stupidity remains in place National will not get my vote, again, no matter how long it takes. You will become a spent force in politics. From what I have read and heard this will remove you from politics, which will be a small consolation for your destruction of our nation.
