Carbon trading project a world first

Sunshine Coast Daily   Digby Hildreth  28 October 2010

A WORLD-FIRST trial of a personal carbon trading scheme that will also target obesity, is to be conducted by Southern Cross University on Norfolk Island.

The three-year project will involve giving everyone on the island a card loaded with carbon units, according to the man leading it, Garry Egger.

“Then every time they go and pay for their petrol or their power – and from the second year their food – it will not only be paid for in money but it will also come off the carbon units they are given for free at the start of the program,” Professor Egger said.

If people are thrifty and don’t buy a lot of petrol or power or fatty foods, they will have units to spare, which they can cash in at a bank.

RIP: Carbon trading

Green Hell Blog  26 October 2010

In a little reported move, the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) is ending carbon trading this year — the very purpose for which it was founded. CCX will remain open for business, however, as it transitions into the murky world of dealing in carbon offsets.

Ronald Kitching: Dangerous Termites Eat Out the Foundations of Western Society

 Breaking Views.co.nz   24 October 2010

Facts about Termites and Carbon Dioxide (CO2):

• Termites produce more Carbon Dioxide (CO2) each year than all living things combined.

• Termites alone produce ten times as much carbon dioxide as all the fossil fuels burned in the whole world in a year.

• Pound for pound, the weight of all the termites in the world is greater than the total weight of humans.

Scrap The ETS Before Things Get Worse

ACT Deputy Leader and Climate Change Spokesman John Boscawen today renewed his call for the Government to scrap the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) following revelations that the price of coal – which has risen as much as 40 percent for some companies – is forcing New Zealanders out of business.

“I predicted that the ETS – which is designed to increase energy and fuel costs – would harm businesses, but National ignored my calls to scrap the scheme and pushed ahead with implementation on July 1,” Mr Boscawen said.

Global warming fraud: the tide begins to turn

James Delingpole 12 October 2010

Funny business, blogging. Sometimes, you put up a post you personally think is genius and no one gives a damn. Other times, you put up a post you imagine is fairly routine – and suddenly the internet goes mental.

US physics professor: “Global warming is the greatest and most successful pseudoscientific fraud I have seen in my long life” definitely belonged in the latter category.

I claim no credit for it. All I did was print, verbatim, a resignation letter written by a distinguished US physics professor Hal Lewis to the American Physical Society. Possibly I helped give it legs by singling out the juiciest quote in the letter and putting it in the headline. That’s all. The true hero of the hour is Professor Lewis for having the courage to stick out his neck and say what so many thousands of other scientists around the world would dearly love to say too: that the global warming industry is a scam and sham.

Britons No Longer Worried About Climate Change

The Independent

by Rachel Shields 10 October 2010

Green fatigue hits campaign to reduce carbon footprint.

Car sales, flights and waste all increase as the recession takes its toll on consumers' motivation.

Britons are less environmentally conscious than they were five years ago, with twice as many people now "bored" by talk of climate change as in 2005. Four in 10 take no action at all to reduce their household carbon dioxide emissions. Experts warn that green fatigue is a major reason why there are more cars on the roads, more planes in the sky and no reduction in the mountain of packaging waste.

As a new energy report reveals that too few people are making an effort to reduce their household CO2 emissions, environmentalists believe the recession is further undermining public commitment.

Hal Lewis Resigns From The American Physical Society After Nearly 70 Years

Daily Express, 12 October 2010

By John Ingham, Environment Editor

A TOP American professor has quit a prestigious academic body after claiming that global warming has become a “scam” driven by “trillions of dollars” which has “corrupted” scientists.

Professor Harold Lewis, 87, described his “revulsion” at last year’s leaked “Climategate” emails which appeared to show scientists at East Anglia’s world-leading Climate Research Unit rigging evidence in favour of man-made climate change.

He branded man-made climate change “the greatest and most successful pseudoscientific fraud” he has ever seen.
