Dear Hon Dr Nick Smith
Thank you for your letter in reply to my E-mail. I must say it was pleasing to receive a composed letter unlike the pro forma replies normally used to acknowledge correspondence.
However, I was gobsmacked by the contents of the letter. The bulk of it looks as if taken straight out of an IPCC report (haven’t you read about Climate-gate?). Successive Governments have tried to use Science (and shonky Science at that) to justify imposing taxes on the ratepayers.
Your letter shows that this Government will impose Emission charges regardless of the lack of justification. The ETS is a political and economic measure which has got nothing to do with Climate Change (which the Prime Minster, and I assume you also, believe in) and is just a way of trying to balance the books.

It appears that big businesses have invested many millions of dollars in planting trees etc. (which is good if done for the right reasons) and other carbon sequestering schemes on the expectation of making fortunes out of trading Carbon Credits. That’s why you are going to pay foresters more than $1100 million. And if the ETS (no matter how absurd it is) is not implemented then they will not make those obscene profits. Don’t you realise that the Carbon Credits scam was devised by the people who ran ENRON and swindled many billions of dollars from the American Public.
The public of New Zealand are gradually waking up to the fact that huge costs are being incurred with no justification. Australia, the USA and the UK etc. are now realising that they have been conned.
THE SCIENCE …… Just in case you need a summary I will give some basic points.
· There is NO dramatic Global temperature change (either up or down) taking place. The figure from NIWA (who seem to be global warming Alarmists) is a rise of 0.6 ‘C OVER THE LAST TEN YEARS ! ! The uncertainty of this figure is at least +/- 1’C and is probably much higher ……consult any good statistician.
· Carbon Dioxide has a close-to-negligible effect on the Temperature. Much less important than CLOUD COVER and SOLAR RADIATION. In the Geological past Concentrations of Carbon Dioxide have been dramatically higher (up to seven times as great ie values of over 2000 parts per million) without increasing temperature significantly and there were no human or industrial releases of Carbon Dioxide at those times. Geological data shows that temperature rises FIRST and then the Carbon Dioxide values rise (ask Gareth Morgan he has the graphs in his book ‘Poles Apart”).
· Carbon Dioxide is NOT a pollutant but an essential ingredient for life. Some increase in its concentration would have great benefits in terms of plant (including trees) growth.
· We do need to conserve our fossil fuels but not because of the Carbon Dioxide they release when burnt but because conservation is good for our future. Alternative energy forms are a disaster. Denmark learnt the hard way and is no longer installing Wind Turbines. They built many, many thousands of them and then found they had to build just as many thermal stations as they did before (and had to keep them running on stand-by) to bridge the gap when the wind didn’t blow. The UK, Ireland, France, Holland all went down the same route (with large government subsidies to get them built) with the same result. With all the Wind / Wave / Tide turbines built in the UK the total contribution to the total energy demand is LESS THAN 5 % !!!! ……. Check the figures.
The UK is now planning to build more Nuclear plants but have left it too late (they take 10 to 15 years from planning to operation) and are faced with a 40% deficit in term of power generation required (2009 figures). Why, oh, why does New Zealand always have to trail along down these ‘dead-end’ paths?
I could continue writing for many pages but if you really want to get a handle on the whole Climate Change Fiasco a quicker way is to read the book “The Real Global Warming Disaster” by Christopher Booker. No relation or association with me, just an excellent book.
I will finish with a quotation from Prof Richard Lindzen (regarded by many as the world’s leading Atmospheric Physicist and Climate Scientist).
“Future generations will wonder in bemused amazement that the early 21st century’s developed world went into hysterical panic over a globally averaged temperature increase of a few tenths of a degree and, on the basis of gross exaggeration of highly uncertain computer predictions combined into implausible chains of inference, proceeded to contemplate a roll-back of the industrial age.”
